What is going on in Detroit?

By Mark Schroeder posted 08-02-2013 12:31

A recent failure of the Motorola radio system in Detroit, per the news articles that are available nationally, should be of some concern to most that are using or depending on Motorola's contracted services, in whatever form they come in. Detroit has received substantial press lately due to its economic challenges, so this issue may appear to be just noise compared to the larger isssues at hand. It would be interesting to somehow track exactly what took place regarding this system failure in order to help all of the Public Safety community take a look at their own best practices and see if there can be an improvement in the maintenance, response, or even the design of systems. Hopefully, the City of Detroit will not be held under an non-disclosure agreement to provide valuable details that could be beneficial to everyone. Here are a couple links to the situation that I have found. I am interested in any and all details that can be shared, in the interest of better best practices for those that manage systems of this type:

Fox 2 video on YouTube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=g0XUjt1I-ZA

A link to Daryl jones weblog (that provides other links to news articles) - http://blog.tcomeng.com/index.php/2013/detroits-digital-p25-radio-system-fails/

If you have any additional information, I would like to see it when it becomes available. As I am sure would others.

Thanks.
