Downgrading a fire assignment

By Heidi Boehl posted 06-30-2011 13:36

I would like feedback to hear if any fire dispatchers are able to "downgrade" an assignment when a supplement states ex:"smoke from cooking" when dispatched for an AMTCA without having anyone fire personnel on location to confirm.

As Nonie stated, only the responding commanders are allowed to downgrade a fire response in any case. We relay any information we recieve from the caller to them, and in most cases they don't downgrade anyways, unless it was originally a fire alarm reported from an alarm company that was then reported false by an on scene civilian with a proper passcode.
On the other side of things, we ARE allowed to UPGRADE a response if we feel it is permissable to do so. One such case is if a civilian on scene where a fire alarm had been reported advises that there is smoke, flames, or anything of that nature that would define a 1st alarm house fire.

We do not down grade the response only advise the responding captain or battalion chief and they make the decision to down grade or not.
